Answers

Q1: What are the apartment complexes around UHCL and what are the rents?
A: The apartment complexes near UHCL are: University Forest Apartments (UFA), Armand Place, and The Retreat (Village Green).
Following are some comparisons between the three:
  • UFA is UHCL accommodation, and you will have a room for yourself if you live there. You cannot choose your own roommates, and the rent is about $300 per person.

  • Armand Place is about 10 minutes walk (5 minutes bike (cycle)) from Delta building, and about 20 minutes walk (10 minutes by bike (cycle)) from SSCB building. They have single, two and three bedroom apartments. You can choose your roommates, and depending on the number of roommates, the rent comes down. A two-bedroom apartment monthly rent is about $700. Usually 5/6 people share a two-bedroom apartment. That way the rent can come down to as little as 130 - 140$
  • The Retreat (Village Green) apartments are just a few minutes further away from Armand Place. The rent is about the same, the only difference is the layout of the apartments.

Once you come here, you can check out the apartments and decide which ones you would prefer.

Other apartment complexes near UHCL are Cove, University Green etc. You might need transportation if you decide to live at any of these apartments.

Q2: I don’t have a place to stay! What do I do!? Will college provide me temporary accommodation till I get one?
A: As international students ourselves, we understand how it is to come to a strange country without knowing anyone. ISA provides courtesy temporary accommodation for all Indian students who come to the US. As long as you let us know prior to your arrival, we will arrange for temporary accommodation in one of the seniors apartments. This is a courtesy provided to you by the seniors. You can stay with other ISA members till you find roommates and a place of your own.

Q5: What can we do to decide roommates, apartments from India itself? Is it possible to book apartment from India itself?
A: While talking to others from India (as mentioned above), you can meet up people who are in your city, or on phone etc. and decide your roommates. But please keep in mind that many things change, and may be people will change their mind about coming to UHCL/ coming this semester itself. So please keep in mind that things might change, and you might have to make alternative plans. It will be much easier to come to UHCL and decide on your apartments, since you will get a much clearer picture after coming here. There’s no need to worry, you will definitely find apartments after coming here.
